Hiring someone to work on your house

Most of the risk in a home repair is not the work. It is the paperwork around it: no written scope, a deposit that is too large, no proof of insurance, and nobody answering afterwards. This page lists home service businesses in the directory, and each listing states the area it serves.

Texas licenses some of these trades and not others. Electricians, plumbers, and air conditioning and refrigeration contractors are licensed by the state, and you can check a licence number with the issuing body. General remodelling and handyman work are largely not licensed. So “licensed” means something specific for some trades and very little for others — ask which licence, and check it yourself.

What should I ask for before work starts?

A licence number for the trades that require one, a certificate of insurance sent by the insurer rather than a photo of one, and a written scope that says what is NOT included. That last one prevents most disputes.

Is a large deposit normal?

A deposit for ordered materials is normal. A large payment for labour before any work happens is not — that is asking you to finance the job and carry the risk.

Do you check these businesses?

A person reviews each listing before it is published: that the business exists, that its details match what it publishes elsewhere, and that the category fits. We do not inspect work and we do not endorse anyone.
